White fillings, technically known as composite fillings, are a modern solution for restoring tooth structure lost due to decay or minor fractures. These fillings offer significant advantages over traditional amalgam (black) fillings, particularly in terms of aesthetics and tooth tissue preservation.
Unlike amalgam fillings, which require the removal of a large portion of healthy tooth structure to ensure retention, composite fillings bond directly to the remaining tooth using advanced adhesive techniques. This allows for a minimally invasive approach, as only the decayed portion is removed before the filling is applied.
Another key advantage of composite fillings is their natural appearance. Available in a wide range of shades and translucencies, they are carefully matched to the patient’s natural tooth color, making the restoration virtually invisible. In contrast, the dark, metallic appearance of amalgam fillings is now considered aesthetically outdated, especially for teeth in visible areas.
